four-minute friday: soundtrack

Go.

Music moves me. That sounds corny. And I’m trying to think of a less cheeseball way to say what I mean, but with the clock ticking, I feel pressure to just keep rambling writing.

Music really is therapeutic to me. God speaks through lyrics and melody lines. He whispers through egg shakers and nudges me with notable percussion. I feel Him in a singer’s voice that takes me by surprise.

My iPod is one of my most prized possessions; it carries a song for every occasion. I’m often behind the times with what others are listening to, but I’m okay with that. I have plenty of music from my favorite “genre”: melancholy.

I didn’t bring a car adapter with me to the States, so I’ve had to improvise. My $10 portable speakers now accompany me as I drive so that I can hear my tunage. I keep it cranked at almost-full volume and it’s nowhere near as loud as I’d like it to be, but that’s okay.

Because I love simply being able to hear the soundtrack of my life.

Done.

I’m with you 100%!!!!! You took the words right out of my mouth (and head) :)

  2. @ngie says:

    You type fast! :-)

I’ve been doing a weekly 5 minute writing “game” on a friend’s blog. She is an author and encourages free writes (like you do with 4min.fri.) to become a better writer. So she launches a topic and then whoever wants to leaves their five minute free write on that topic in her comment box. I have figured out that I type at 28 words per minute. According to this you type at 44 words per minute. That is good! :-)

As to your content… I really wish music was more important to me. I feel like that is one of the weaknesses in my life. Seriously. It is on my someday shelf to address at some point. I am musically defective. DaRonn tells me that owning an iPod would revolutionize my life… maybe I should start there…

  3. Heidi says:

Music is like my second heartbeat.

  4. danielle says:

Music is good. I, too, have songs for every occasion. Music can help me out of (or into) a funk, into praise, into enegry to clean faster, into memories…

  5. Lisa says:

I love how a certain song can take me back to a specific time and good memories. For example, Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” takes me right back to my freshman year at college in Texas. I love the way it does that.

The way God speaks to you through music, He speaks to me through movies. A LOT.

  6. Photoqueen says:

    “the soundtrack of my life”

    “Music is my second heartbeat.”

These are beautiful words, Alece and Heidi. They reflect my heart and my life, too. And if you want corny, here you go – sometimes music makes me cry. Not because it makes me think of something in my life, but just because it is. It may not necessarily even be good. It just IS.

  7. Debra says:

I’m right there with you … nothing can transport me into God’s presence like music.

  8. katie says:

    I concur!!

my friend had a bunch of girls in her Bible study create a cd with a soundtrack of their lives.

the only catch is the songs have to fit on one cd. I haven’t done mine yet…it’s kind of overwhelming!

  9. alece says:

katie — i could never narrow mine down to fit on a cd.

    ::anyone and everyone::

what are some of your favorite songs/artists right now?

i always love checking out new recommendations…

  10. Theresa says:

I love music…Don’t get me started. Just ask Mandy. She made the mistake of getting me started on Twitter one day. :)

Been to too many concerts to keep track of. All kinds of music. There isn’t any kind of music that I can’t find something good about. I truly, at the age of 40, listen to hip hop, rap, jazz, blues, metal, contemporary, classical, opera, rock.

When I worked at a car lot the little mexican detail guy came and took my little miata one day. I thought he was going to wash it or something. Well he stripped out a big thumper speaker and amp from a trade in and put it in my trunk. My little car thump thump thumps down the road. I love it. LOL

    Current Favorites:
    Manafest
    12 Stones
    New Third Day
    New Mercy Me
    New Jeremy Camp

See I warned you not to get me started. LOL

  11. Tracee says:

i think your genre is Emoancholy

  12. alece says:

glad i could make you laugh, t-bird. i do love me some egg shakers. i used to want to be a percussionist so bad, mostly for the djembes and egg shakers.

“emoancholy” will forever make me laugh.

  13. Tracee says:

i mean we could have some egg shaker jam sessions any time! hahaha i don’t know why this makes me laugh so much! it’s up there with PA

  14. alece says:

    it ranks that high?! wow.

i’m thinking of all sorts of “that’s what she said”s about shaking eggs…

    but i shall refrain.

  15. Tracee says:

i mean i could dabble in a little triangle if you needs a back up person!

you can shake my eggs anytime….hahahaha!

  16. Heidi says:

WHy don’t you just buy another car adapter?

    just sayin…

Ok.. you guys are makin me laugh and these customers are staring at me!! and I can’t go pee yet!!!

  17. alece says:

speaking of triangles… my friend sent me this last night: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2Z6tDSb6c8

make note. day 11 is for egg shaking.

  18. alece says:

the car adapters are like $70, that’s why! :)

glad we could make you laugh with our crazy banter. go pee, friend!

  19. Tracee says:

i mean in all honest i should call my ladies egg shakers because that’s how big they are!

    oh egg shaker it’s true

  20. Tracee says:

look at you learning emoancholy on sesame street!

  21. Brandy says:

Oh girl, you know how I can identify with this post!!!

    I love you!

  22. alece says:

    tre — you & your nine-year old egg shakers…

  23. Tracee says:

brandy, wondering when your ears would start to burn with this stuff starting!

  24. Tracee says:

HAHAHA! Should be nine year old non-shakers, will never shake girls

  25. alece says:

oh come on… ya gotta shake what yo’ momma gave ya!

  26. Heidi says:

If I did the epic center of the next earth quake would be in SD. Ha!!!

    BUt I’ll do it!!

  27. Tracee says:

oh that is a whole different end and song to send you next. you know sunshine comes out my djembes

  28. Heidi says:

I need to live a little!!

  29. Tracee says:

Heidi, let down your eggs a little to shake free!

  30. alece says:

@heidi — way to make front page news!

@tre — song to send me next? and yes, sunshine does come out your djembe!

  31. jaceinafrica08 says:

    danggggg i love you.
    and you sound like me.

my mom doesn’t have an Ipod thing so i always have my 10 dollar speakers with me by my side. loveeeeeeee you and miss rocking out with you.

i know how you guys feel now when people don’t pick good music when they are the “DJ” hahhaa.

  32. edfromct says:

It will take me a lot more than 4 minutes to write about music. I can’t imagine a day without music, and I begin and end each day with my iPod.

I ended last night with the Latin rhythms of Brazilian singer Maria Rita’s “A Festa”. I began today with “Impossible Dream” from Man From La Mancha. I just downloaded the hard driving R&R beat of Boxer Rebellions “Evacuate”.

My musical choices often reflect my mood. After breaking up with a girlfriend in high school it was Hank Williams “I am So Lonesome I Could Cry.” During my NYC dancing disco days it was “Turn the Beat Around” by Vicki Sue Robinson.

One of the most beautiful song is Luciano Pavarotti singing “Ava Maria”. One of the most joyful is The Edwin Hawkins Singers with “Oh Happy Day”.

  33. i have a life sound track too…=)

  34. roo says:

:-) Today I listened to Relient K’s The Birds and the Bee Sides. I also listened to Ryan Shupe and the Rubberband. They’re not much worth buying, but I might share a song with ya… and, hm. A while back, I was absolutely hung up on the humor of Jonathan Coulton’s “music.” I’ll send you one of those, too. Just for the fun of it. Though, thinking about it, none of the above are really that great. If you’re looking for good or fun music, I’d recommend Sia. I need to buy more of her music. Here ends my huge comment… right after a link to the latest WHITE NINJA that this audience might appreciate lots. ;-)

  35. Brandy says:

    Ed, love your comment! ;-)

Tracee, ears burning? Should I have read the comments before mine?? ;-)

  36. taylor says:

i blogged about my ipod’s thirty most-played songs yesterday, and red dirt [reeeaaaal country, oklahoma/texas style] apparently dominates my existence. as much christian music as i also possess, only a few of those songs crept onto the list. so it’s evidently time to break out my big belt buckle and pearl snap shirt. :)

  37. jane says:

had an older mp3. husband got me a nanno for Christmas with speakers that are portable. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE having tunes so available!
two of my favorites: Downhere and Lee McDerment (worship leader at our church)

  38. alece says:

jace — you’ve had some bad DJs?!

ed — i love how much you love music…

roo — your comment cracked me up. and that white ninja comic was awesome!

taylor — you certainly enjoy country music, don’t you!?

jane — yay for husbands and ipods!

  39. Heidi says:

I think I need to buy an Ipod.

  40. Brandy says:

    you and me both Heidi!

  41. Brandy says:

    did someone mention BOOBS?!

  42. roo says:

Ha! I did, Brandy. ;-) Surrogate-ly through my WN link.
And… I wish I weren’t so tired. I might force my eyes open for much longer to hang out at the g&g.

  43. louise says:

You’re the first person I’ve come across that can also say that God talks to them so much through music. It’s the most that He speaks to me, actually, but also through books sometimes.

    Try:

    Tom McCrae
    William Orbit

  44. tam says:

music. i have to have it on.

when im alone in the house all day it is on in the back ground.

i’ll get stuck on certain cds too. for a year straight i listened to jon mclaughlins “indiana” over and over and over. it spoke to me. God moved through it too.

it is its own language. and i understand it. with or with out words – it always has something to say.

  45. jaceinafrica08 says:

yesss alece, i’ve had bad DJ’S, while i was driving to Annapolis and back with thee Mammma bird we had 20 minutes of silence hahaha, i was like Mammma bird click next song.

it stunk, so yeah i’ve had some bad DJ’s especially my little sisters haha.

  46. roo says:

Jacer… I never ever volunteer to be DJ ’cause I like such random and eclectic music! I finally gave up and made a “party mix” on my iPod for my friends. I might be one of those bad DJs, though I do usually remember to turn on the next song!

  47. roo says:

…and I love the new banner, Lecey.

  48. jaceinafrica08 says:

hahhah ohhhhhhhhh Rooooo, i guess that’s amazing that you made a mix just for your friends. i should do that for mine. all friends are different so that could be hard. i am glad you at least remember to turn it to the next song. 20 minutes of silence was so HARDDDDDDDDDDDD.

hahaha love you alece :), i know your an AMAZING, AMAZINGGGGG DJ.

  49. I have been listening to “Echos, silence, patience and grace” album by the Foo Fighters this past week…seriously, amazing.

  50. Debra says:

Alece … love that banner photo! :) Been praying for you!

  51. myheartresonateswithaglorioussound says:

do post good song suggestions!! :-)
    I would LOVE some
on one of your previous posts someone commented with “Learning to Fall” by beautiful republic and I downloaded it and have it on my ipod :-)

  52. I thought I lost my iPod a few days ago. heart attack!!!
    :)

  53. Julie says:

sometimes I think God speaks to me the most through songs. I am so thankful for music that cuts right to the heart of things. Sometimes to make you laugh, sometimes weep, sometimes it results in true worship…God meeting us in the most unexpected moments.

for recommendations all I would say for worship music: any of Travis Cottrell’s worship cds. He is amazing.
