crazy love

I had to bring my engagement ring to the jewelers’ in New York for a cleaning and a li’l fixing. While we were there, Niel asked the saleswoman about upgrading my stone to a larger carat size. (!) She jumped into high-gear and showed us a gorgeous diamond. Niel was all for it, but I told him I thought we should wait due to economic reasons.

Ms. Jeweler leaned over the glass counter. “He wants to do it and you’re saying no? You’re crazy!”

My heart swelled in that moment. Not because I was proud to be called crazy, but because I am so blessed to have a husband who wants to love me in crazy ways, just because.

And I was so glad we left the store without another anal incident.

  1. awwww….

    ::smile::

  2. :)
Glad you said no. I think, for sentimentality’s sake, I’d want to keep the original as well.

  3. So that is why I notice your gorgeous ring on this post: http://gritandglory.com/2008/09/04/except-when-its-not/ ? Is that the upgrade?

You can let Neil know that this will be one post that I will not be sharing with my husband. I am going to find my man and tell him thanks for something he has done for me. :-)

  4. I’m with @ngie, your ring is amazing…

anal is such a tough word..

  5. that’s awesome!!!

  6. what a guy.

i think i’d keep my stone as well!

  7. Okay, now I do think that was crazy, but then again, I wouldn’t want another diamond, just b/c I wouldn’t be able to say “this is the same ring I got on our wedding day” ya know? But a larger diamond somewhere else would be nice too! LOL!

And the anal story. Yeah. Wow. My jaw hit the table! She could not be so….welll….. nevermind. ;-)

    love you!

I love waking up to new posts! :D

  8. angie — ha! my ring did make it into that picture. but it’s not the upgrade… cause i didn’t get one. i said “no” remember? :-)

mandy and danielle — i guess i should “confess” that i’m not opposed to an upgrade. maybe someday. now’s just not the time. but i must admit that with the cleanin’ and fixin’ my ring looks gorgeous right now, and i am LOVING it again! you know how it’s on your finger everyday so you kinda take it for granted and don’t even “notice” anymore? i notice again. and i like that.

  9. bran muffin — morning friend! and good thing you “nevermind”ed that sentence up there… i’m sure you have kids nearby.

  10. OK - I agree you are crazy. I love crazy love!

  11. how’s come “the guy” always gets shot down??? hopefully he wasn’t devastated…

  12. I’m with you, a new diamond would be nice but it has to be the right time. By the way, I think your ring is beautiful!

  13. That was a sweet thing to offer and a sweet thing to turn down. I’m sure he’ll be glad you all waited when he thinks about how much it would’ve cost! :0

Sounds like you’ve got a great guy!

  14. WHAT DOSAGE PAIN MEDS WERE YOU STILL TAKING????

Are diamonds cheaper in SA? Aren’t there huge mines there?

  15. I neverminded for your readers. ;-) haha!

And so they don’t think I’m a hethen of course. LOL!

  16. Crazy love … :) Mmm … I think most men have this irrational bent towards generosity with their ladies. Trying to paint a picture here? ;) I think so. Thanks to all the generous menfolk for showing us the lavish heart of God. :)

  17. Aw thats sweet, but it looks like your ring is HUGE already!! hehe. After three years of being married I found out that Dan spent twice as much as he had planed on my ring because he knew it was the ring that would make me happy. I felt SO bad that he had spent THAT much, but he was right. I never want an upgrade and I think if I got one it would be too huge!
I was wondering about diamonds in Africa as well, are they cheaper there? I remember in Maun looking at some rings but having no idea what things should cost.

  18. You left it kinda open there: “but I told him I thought we should wait”… There was still the possibility that he vetoed your ‘thought’. :-)

All the best to you, friend!

  19. you are so lovable!!

    glad you kept the diamond.

and niel? you hunk of lovin man you!!!

  20. oh crap!

can i say that about your husband???

  21. You did the right thing…
stupid sales woman really tried hard for the sale…

Its not how big the diamond is anyway, its how big the heart who gave it to you…

    don’t ya think:)

  22. Hi alece, is your new ring the one you wore in that photo you posted not so long ago, where you were holding the green mug? It’s just that I noticed how lovely it was in that pic! :)

  23. jon mark — you gave me a different perspective on this… and hubs and i had a good talk about it. i wanted to know if that’s really how he felt, and thankfully he didn’t. obviously i didn’t write out too many details of the situation here, but the final decision was one we came to together. … but i am so glad you said that.

soliloquy — you know, i had just taken some codeine. i wonder if… nah! let’s not go there! :-) as for the diamonds, they should be cheaper here but they’re not significantly. diamonds that are mined here are usually sent to england for “processing” (or whatever) and then have to be bought back into SA to be sold here. so… no savings!

annie — what a GREAT thought!!!

faith — see above. hee hee!

@ngie — you’re so right! sorry ’bout that!

tam — ‘course you can! what are sisters for?!

birgit — nope… i didn’t get a new ring, so the one in that picture was my “old” one… that i love!

  24. phew! didnt want you to come back and kick my butt or anything!

    wait.

actually…what CAN i do to get you to come back and kick my butt???

  25. buy me a ticket…

  26. (i wish. you wish. we all wish. i know, don’t worry!)

  27. Tam did you hear that!!!

If we pool our pennies together, (alot of pennies) we can get our Alece fix…

  28. aw, that’s so sweet! I think you have a keeper!

  29. i DO have a keeper!!!

next month we celebrate 8 years!
