coffee talk: met on the net

Do you even like coffee? Cause we’ve been drinking a lot of it here at the Grit this week.

Shifting gears slightly from our other conversations, my question today is less spiritual in nature.

What do you think of meeting (in person) someone you’ve met on the internet?

Talk amongst yourselves.

  1. Well.. generally i’d say i’m ‘pro’ or ‘for’ it..
but it would be so much easier for me personally if someone could just move Australia and anchor it a litte ways off the Coast of the US - say somehwere neare Oregon?? :-)

‘Preferably ‘up-side-down’ so’s the west coast of Aus is closest to you guys ..and FAST - so’s i can catch ALece before she moves back home!

  2. I like it in cases when it’s Natalie. ;)

  3. Welp, I am all about it being that most of my friends are now computer friends…duh, it is a God-send. I have actually met and maintained met-on-the-net friends and they are just like or better then in my imagination they would be. I can’t remember if I started blogging with you before or after we met…but you are even more fabulous in person then on the computer…and so are the other handful of bloggers I have met in person. I have only met people that way though…do chat-rooms even exist anymore? Most of my blogger friends I know in person, I knew before I blogged with them…so I know that doesn’t count or not what you are talking about…but I think that this is just another medium to build and keep relationships going/growing and isn’t that why we are all here for anyways? P.S. One time I did have a lady recognize me at Starbucks (before we came here) from a picture on my blog (I assume) and tell me all about her and her husband and that they read my blog and bla bla…she was like out of nowhere “are you Kristiapplesauce?” It was the coolest/weirdest thing. I keep telling people I am famous but nobody believes me :) Okay, I keep telling Dan but HE doesn’t believe me. Ha!

  4. Kristiapplesauce - That is a wild story. We know a famous person. :-) cool!

I think that, as in any relationship, we should be wise but also remember what we have learned from MTTV: bloggers are people too. So people you meet on line are just that: people.

  5. Oh - And yes I like coffee. And yes I like talking over coffee.

  6. I LOVE coffee. It’s a staple of life for me.

Okay.. I think if you approach it cautiously, meeting people off the internet (blogs) would be fine.

  7. So wait sec…Angie, have we met? Did I meet you? I suck if we did. If not, Alece and I are talking about hanging out whenever she finds her way back home…we need to drink some coffee or something together. I promise not to act all crazy like. Okay…I can’t really promise that, but I will try really hard not to. Okay, scratch that. If you want to meet and if you don’t care if I act like a crazy person circle yes or no.

  8. errr…awkward. But doable if necessary. And better when done in a group of your own friends.

    yes, that’s all.

  9. Yes, I’d agree with Kelly on the group of friends thing. I think I’d prefer to go that route, however, my mind tends to wander to the worst possible scenario sometimes, which would make me hesitant to such a thing, and usually things turn out great.

If two people really really want to meet each other, that means there’s an interest in their lives, so there will surely be plenty to talk about.

    I’d say yes.

  10. i have so many blogger friends i am dying to meet! it’s pathetic! Cool Dad from

http://arewestillcool.blogspot.com/ just had a dream last night about visiting Brent and me. He’s worried now =o but i think it’s normal to want to have a real life connection with people you’ve connected with on so many deeper levels.

Alece - I would faint for days if I knew we were ever going to meet!!! You have NO idea!

and Love - why don’t you get on with moving Australia over here, k?! I would save thousands in airfare and get a decent beach! Yay me!

  11. I told this morning in chat that I ALSO had a dream about a bloggers get together last night, but instead of TALKING, we were all still communicating through our laptops. HA!!!

Meeting a dear blog friend would be amazing. I would cry. For sure. It would make my year!!! It would be one of those “too good to be true” things where you can’t stop smiling or pinching yourself.

I think met on the net friends are awesome b/c they can go with you everywhere. After we moved, my blog friendships stayed the same. I love it. Makes my heart happy. :D

Love you a whole lot too! ;-)

  12. Kristiapplesauce - You are too funny! :-) No, we have never met. By saying “we know a famous person” just means I read your blog and know about you through comments, etc. There is a chance that we had some kind of contact if you were ever involved in Teen Mania for the brief time I was. Besides that - I am in Bolivia (South America). We are living on the same hemisphere - but there is still the issue of an ocean and thousands of miles.

Oh - and I don’t think you are too crazy - just crazy enough. I wouldn’t care in the least bit if you were crazy when we met. :-)

  13. My first reaction is “Kinda weird…”
But there are quite a few people I’d love to meet - @ngie, and a few others are on that list. And lately, I feel a bit as if some of my friends like Alece and Becca are more blog-friends than real friends. Only because I haven’t seen you in ages. But hey. Friends are friends, no matter where we are! :)
    So…
    I’m for it.

  14. Before I met this wonderful community of people, I wouldn’t have thought about it but it’s a different story now! I can’t wait to meet people that I’ve connected so deeply with here. I know I would cry too Brandy!

So peoples, come on when are we getting together *snaps fingers* LOL

Love you Alece–would LOVE TO MEET YOU!

  15. Hey Alece,

There’s still a plate of tacos and a beautiful San Diego beach waiting for us!!

    Love ya!!

  16. P.S. I don’t like coffee.
    But I like the atmosphere.
So I like half of the experience.

  17. I’m ambivalent - I would love to meet many people but at times, I wonder if we would lose the mystery. You know, familiarity breeds contempt…?

  18. Alece, I thought of this earlier today AFTER I posted before. Actually, I thought of it when I was doing laundry. Don’t know why, just did, and it made me laugh.

Since we’ve been drinking a lot of coffee this week, I know what else you and I have been doing a lot of.

Sawreee. I couldn’t help it. It made me laugh really loud when I thought about that. I’m sure Jake wondered why I was having so much fun in the laundry room. HAHAHAH!!!!

  19. Tam? i keep paddling like crazy on the West Coast but the darn country stubbornly refuses to budge?

    Any suggestions/offers of help?? :-)

i think little Al may have kidnaped Leesh and is only allowing her five minutes a day to blog - perhaps four?

What does everyone else think? :-)

    <B

  20. there are a handful of bloggers that i’d like to meet. and i think i’d be nervousexcited at the chance.

  21. Love: Alece will be back soon!

  22. Happy dance! :-)

    Thanks Bec’

  23. mandy — “nervousexcited” about sums it up for me, too. i wonder what that sounds like…

michelle raised a good point, though. i wonder about that whole “losing the mystery” thing…

and i’m making a pouty lip that i’ve been missing out on all this fun dialogue on my own blog. sad.
