flotsam and jetsam

Some happenings over the past few days:

  • We had a great week in Colorado. We’ll be returning there for sure.
  • I got to see an old friend whom I hadn’t seen in almost a decade. It very quickly felt like old times, and I so enjoyed meeting his wife and holding his baby.
  • I spent an hour with my high school English teacher. Mrs. Warren believed in my writing ability when I was just a nerdy, insecure teenager. (Yes. I really was a nerd. Still am.)

Random snippets from yesterday:

  • I talked to a new friend on the phone for the first time ever. It felt…comfortable. Like snuggling on my couch with a blanket and a mug of lemon tea.
  • A friend sent me a message: Africa misses you. That made my day.
  • We spent 12 hours in the Denver airport because our flight got canceled. We finally arrived in California at midnight.
  • I kept my laptop company while Niel napped during our lock-in at the airport.

Oh—and…uhhh… Have you seen what’s going on over at The Anti-Blogger?! Please leave some more puppy love on my site.

:) so i remember a time that my flight in joberg was delayed… and so I lied down on top of my backpack and slept. good thing i woke up as my flight was boarding!

wow! it’s been a while since we had a f & j! niel’s great. so are you.

i vote for a small outside dog.

since that’s not one of the options, i’ll side with alece.

Hehehe.
I like that picture of Niel.

I love you.

My little dude looks like he’s thinking intently. Looks like me when I’m trying to figure something out perhaps.

I got delayed in Denver one time - a plane crashed during take off, November 1987. I spent the night in Salt Lake City. Not a good 24 hours, Many lives were lost in that crash. My son was meeting me there - They turned him away - closed the airport - no way I could let him know I was okay. Not a good day for many.

you can’t see how big the smile is, but its big.

next time, can we have hot chocolate? ;)

Somebody needs to get a clue and make airport terminal chairs comfortable!

So what’s the current definition of nerd? Because I had heard it was kinda the thing to be…

Mr. van Rensburg must have that afore mentioned allergy as well if he can sleep with an iPod in his ears.

Ok, so one of your random snippets almost made my jaw drop. I know you’re a big-ole introvert and … first time on the phone with new friend?! That’s a wowzers. I’m not sure how I would have handled it. I have trouble with moderately close old friends! Yikes!

12 hours in an airport? oooh. poo. I agree with Angie. I think the longest I’ve spent is 8 hours. There is NOTHING fun to do for that long in an airport, and it is UNCOMFORTABLE. Even sleeping. Which is what I try to do. (Bravo Niel.)

And Mrs. Warren was right. :) Is she going to visit your blog now? :D

poor Niel!

Aren’t airports just sooo much fun! We did miss you on circus night, although…you didn’t miss much “circus” action. Everyone back here misses you :)

becca - he does look like you. tongue and all.

papa - woah… that is so horrible. i can’t even imagine…

mandy - only if there’s whip cream.

@ngie - niel loves using his iPod when we travel these days. it’s cute actually. and yeah… if natalie’s a nerd, than i’m proud to be one too!

annie - glad you picked up on that. and yes yes yes, it was a pretty big deal for me. but it was a great phone call. we actually talked for something like 56 minutes or something like that! incredible. (and i’m not sure if mrs. warren will enter blogland… i’ll have to email her the web address…)

AND caramel syrup drizzled on top! = panera = heaven

Isn’t CA beautiful?

I don’t know what part of our state you are in.

WELCOME!!

What a long day at the airport… and you probably didn’t have any gummy worms on hand (or under seats) to bring a smile to your face!!!

heidi - we flew into oakland and spent one night there for a meeting in livermore. now we’re up in visalia until we fly to seattle on sunday. i was surprised by how many dairy farms i passed on the drive here. for a moment, i thought i was back in harrismith, south africa!

amy - oh. my. cow. i haven’t thought of that in forever and a day. good times right there. good times!

Next time drop south we’ll go to TJ for tacos and lay on the beach. San Diego is where it’s happening

tacos and beach sound GREAT!
