still smiling

I don’t often have the luxury of saying to my friends in America, “See you tomorrow!” But tonight I did.

And I’m still smiling about it.

Danielle put together a wonderful jamboree for us. OK, we didn’t really call it a jamboree. Only Yeller and I did in emails and chats. In real life we called it “An Evening with Thrive Africa”. But “jamboree” is certainly more fun to say.

There were about 30 people there, almost all of whom we’ve never met before. They seemed excited to hear what God is doing in South Africa. (Which is always encouraging!) I even got to meet some friends-of-a-wonderful-friend. And I ate strawberry shortcake.

It was a great night indeed.

And ending it by giving Danielle a hug and saying “See you tomorrow” just about made me squeal with giddiness. I never never never get that luxury. (Still smiling.)

We are hanging with her and her family for a few hours tomorrow, and I know it’s going to be great. The bit of time we had to connect tonight was already wonderful. (She even invited us to do laundry at her house… What a friend!)

AND… I don’t have to set my alarm for the morning. The thought of sleeping in is just…Wow! The perfect ending to a great night.

Yep. Still smiling…

  1. So glad to hear that your ‘jamboree’ went well. I was thinking about you all yesterday. Are we going to see pictures? Maybe I should nudge Danielle to post some. :-)

  2. Maureen says:

  3. alece says:

  4. alece says:

(oh yeah - i even hijacked her camera for a bit and took many many pictures of her eating… and on the phone (a common position for her to be in!—-on the phone, i mean. not eating!)… make sure you see some of those too! hee hee)

  5. yeller says:

who is this “danielle” you’re all talking about? do YOU know anyone by that name?

and…what pictures do you speak of? :)

  6. alece says:

what pictures?! oh don’t make me steal your camera and post ALL of them!

  7. My, my Alece… when you are giddy and smiley and happy you are feisty too. I already had to break up one bickering match today - let’s not make it two! :-)

I will be getting along with my nudging then… I will have to address her by her proper title of Yeller or Thumbuddy - then maybe she will listen. :-)

  8. Amy says:

I’m so happy for you… what a wonderful season of having friends physically close!!! I hope your day with Yeller today is spectacular… and know that I’m also with you girls in heart :)

    Love you!!

Oh, poo. That’s not fair. The thing deleted all my spaces! That was a huge smiley face. :(

But I was trying to say “:)” REALLY big. :)

  11. Natalie Jane says:

Still in disbelief that you are so close.

  12. sarah says:

It’s those simple pleasures that we take for granted isn’t it? I remember telling my mom that, “See you tomorrow!” and she was like, “Oh it’s so wonderful to hear that again!”

  13. alece says:

gigi — i wish you could see the pictures yeller DIDN’T post!

maymes — you WERE with us today. at one point we mentioned you, and daniel says, “amy who? you mean maymer?” we laughed really hard.

annie — thanks for that huge smile via morse code.

talia — wish i could have seen you one more time before i leave the states. ::sigh::

    sarah — isn’t that awesome?!

  14. now I’M smiling!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. alece says:

  16. alece says:

  17. yeller says:

okay, i came back to reread this one because i love it. wish we could do that more. love you.

  18. alece says:

    mmmmm… meeeeee tooooooo!

  19. you know how you mentioned bookmarking amy’s post about alece jr.? i had bookmarked this one to come back to and smile :)

  20. alece says:

hee hee! i love it! and i love you!

  21. danielle says:

I just reread that one. I think one of my favorite memories from the jamboree, other than you giving me the “eye” during the thrive presentation was you stealing my camera - including the food and always constant phone shots! i’ll have to email them all to you.

Oh, BUT, lets not forget the lemonade.

The beauty of Africa lies not in her landscape or wildlife, but in her people. Their eyes tell stories that can never be written and their smiles speak of an illogical hope that is never shaken.

More than a decade ago I came to "change Africa", but Africa has changed me.
