so they say

“Multi-tasking is dead. It never worked and it never will. Intelligent people love to sing its praises because it gives them permission to avoid the much more challenging alternative: focusing on one thing.”
–Timothy Ferriss

I have prided myself on my ability to multi-task. Now I need to try to get good at single-tasking.

Interesting quote…but I still think there is something to be said for a proficient multi-tasker!

That’s an interesting quote. There is something to be said for being focused … but clearly this gentleman was completely misinformed about strengths other than his own. haha. Well. I don’t know the guy. I think both are strengths, and being balanced is good; but knowing your strengths and working within them (wasn’t this a post of yours?) is still best. I think the focused tasker needs the multi-tasker, and the multi-tasker needs the focused tasker, so .. it’s best all around if they work within their strengths together!

i agree that there’s something to be said for multi-tasking. and i’m not aiming to stop that. just to ALSO become better at being focused on one thing at a time when it matters. like with people. there’s nothing worse than feeling like one of many things someone is doing at once. i need to get better at fully and completely engaging with people when i interact with them, without letting my mind wander to other things.

Yes - It all comes down to knowing what is the best at that certain time. People who are single-taskrs sometimes need to pick up the pace. And then us multi-taskers need to identify when it would be good to slow down and focus.

Good discussion material.

Alece - TRUE. And very good point. There is definitely something to be said for being able to steadily focus on one thing (or person). Great point. That actually bothered me about my Mom - she was such a multi-tasker that she didn’t know how to sit down and give me her full attention - which I desperately needed. Hmmm. I didn’t see it that way.

i agree with you. you have to have wisdom when to know do focus and when to multitask.
