We spent a few days in Johannesburg this week to attend a leadership conference. I love learning and developing, so I really enjoyed the event. (But talk about information overload! My brain has been working overtime ever since, trying to figure out how to apply all I learned!) It was also great to drive our new car to the city for the first time, spend that time with Niel, and get to eat out anywhere other than our handful of local restaurants.
One of my rules when we’re in a city is that we’re not allowed to eat at a restaurant we have in our town. I figure, if I’m all the way up in Joburg, I want to be eating some place I don’t often have access to. One of my all-time favorite city eateries is Primi Piatti. It’s got a casual, fun atmosphere and some of the best Italian food I’ve eaten in Africa.
I’m a pretty boring orderer — anywhere I go, I tend to always order the same meal. (At Primi, it’s Pollo Giorgio…mmm-mmm!) I guess I’m not very adventurous. I’d rather stick with what I know .
In the spirit of full disclosure, let me just share that I even do this in public bathrooms. If it’s a restroom that I’ve visited before, I will inevitably use the same stall I did the first time. I don’t even plan it; it usually just happens. And it always makes me smile to myself as I’m closing the stall door…
Do you have any rules or idiosyncrasies to share?

Hmmm … well, I can’t think of any specifics right now. I have noticed, though, in regard to bathroom stalls … the second one available when one walks in the door is the one typically used - by everyone! I’ve never been the one responsible for changing the toilet paper … so I guess I can’t say for certain … but I have noticed. :) In general, I am not a creature of habit, though. I like change and variety to spice things up and keep life interesting.

We’ve discovered a good, cheap Mexican place by our house- and I’ve only ever ordered one item… the Chimichange special… I’ve never needed to try anything else b/c it is SOOOOO good!
In bathrooms… I always use the first stall- I saw a special on Dateline and this is supposed to be the least used one… but who knows after they made that discovery public!

I love eating at places other than what we have here. It’s almost like an adventure to find a “lekker” restaurant. Have you tried Burgandy’s - it’s not a burger place.
I try to not use public bathrooms. :( I’m a bit whimsical (got this word in the dictionary –hehe) when it comes to public bathrooms.
I can’t think of any habits, except that I ALWAYS tie my right shoelace before the left one. If I do it the other way around I feel unbalanced the whole day.

that’s funny — just in Traverse City I was having a huge internal debate about whether or not we should eat in one of the cool “downtown” restaurants or not - we ended up at Olive Garden, we know it, we like it. I also order pretty much the same thing. boring (but at least I know it’ll be good)
I’m sure I have some wired habits… I’ve noticed that in class or something if I get nervous I tend to take sips of water to try to appear “non-nervous”. I twirl my hair when I am tired, bored or tense. Do those things count?:)
And I like the new photo!

You say such formal words as “rules and idiosyncrasies”. I say, “quirks”…LOL! Your wording is much more sophisticated! I just love the way “quirk” sounds. It’s quirky!
I guess that’s an idiosyncrasy! (I can just hear us now - if we were together - “guirk”, “guirk”, “guirk”, “idio - sync - ro - sy”. Then I would say something like, “Say, ‘quirk’.” “Quirk”. “Don’t tell anyone it’s a family secret.”
We’d be doing an Elmo laugh!!! Oh, how I miss your presence!
